Independent for New Westminster Council

Misc. topics

Accessibility

Almost 24% of our population is over 60. An increasingly people are using mobility aids. Many of our sidewalks have connecting ramps that lead diagonally into the street. This causes anyone on a scooter or pushing a stroller to go into traffic before being able to cut back into the sidewalk. We need an engineering review on the safety problem, to get ramps to go into the crosswalk area.

Affordable Housing

I have a plan that will give the City control of individual apartments at low cost. These units will be available to those of our City being renovicted. I will also push for either a bylaw or a contract, to have those same tenants grandfathered back in. This will also benefit developers to help the supply of housing, and it could save them from having to pay out at least part of the 12 months rent now required for a demoviction.

Community Safety and Security

Police are often not seen unless attending an incident or driving somewhere. Community interaction and relationship building need to be improved beyond the present good efforts. They should be spending more time in the community, walking around and building relationships with the general public, so that we all can mutually help to respond to issues before they become critical. The area of New Westminster is less than 15 square kilometers, so this shouldn't be a logistical issue.

Development and Overdevelopment

I have a plan that will give the City control of individual apartments at low cost. These units will be available to those of our City being renovicted. I will also push for either a bylaw or a contract, to have those same tenants grandfathered back in. This will also benefit developers to help the supply of housing, and it could save them from having to pay out at least part of the 12 months rent now required for a demoviction.

Environment & Sustainability

Ecological responsibility starts with the individual. Many of the apartment buildings have flat roofs. If the owner would allow the tenants to grow flowers or vegetables in rooftop containers, the City could provide tax credits. New apartment buildings should have growing roofs or garden space as part of the required amenities plan. Expand community garden opportunities. There are many ideas for greening the City for which the City could be proactive.

Public Engagement

BELIEVE IN ACCOUNTABILITY. I will be completely approachable and publish my cell phone # 778-697-1071. Any questions…you have my number. I will attend every community association meeting where invited such as “West-End” “Brow of Hill” “Sapperton” “Quayside” “Massey” "Queensborough". I also intend to regularly publish events on Facebook for people to have coffee and talk about whatever is on their mind.

Taxes

Our New Westminster voters should worry why our City average municipal spending per person is nearly 45 percent higher than the average for the list of biggest municipalities. (Vancouver Sun)

I firmly believe that everyone should not only have a home that they can afford but also one they are comfortable in. This extends beyond the four walls and out into the community.
