Jeffrey Smith

Independent for Richmond School Board

Misc. topics

Accessibility

I support accessibility to schools for students living in their catchment areas

Community-Building

3. Providing more electives/ new curriculum for students that are aligned with new Provincial mandates. My idea of addressing this issue is to pressure the government to speed up the process in reviewing curriculum the teachers are suggesting that will meet well-thought out deadlines as it is introduced to the student population and work with Universities to help them change how they view new student assessment standards and curriculum in accepting new students.

Diversity

I support more funding for ESS and EA for students from diverse cultures and special needs students

Drug Use

I support revising existing anti-drug use in schools to include the new laws governing the use of marijuana.

Good Governance

I believe that good governance involves collaboration through compromise between school administrators and parents. Transparent communication is the key to creating effective policies and meeting the needs of the people with goverrnment funding

Mental Wellness

I believe in supporting and promoting any initiatives that promote mental health awareness for our students and teachers. We need to better recognize these symptoms and provide the understanding and necessary support required in helping deal with the stresses from learning or personal issues.

Natural Disaster Measures

6. Updating technologies in the classroom. I believe that funding for technology should be ongoing in order to improve the learning of all students and also giving teachers a better tool in providing instruction more effectively and efficiently.

School Staffing

2. Funding of Incentive and other similar programs throughout the district- To address this problem, I would work with the other members of the school board and Superintendent to re-allocate financial resources to ensure that adequate teachers are provided and programs are not discontinued. More full-time positions must be offered to attract long-term teachers.

Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Curriculum and Supports

1. I fully support SOGI policies but believe we should look at modifying them to build better community support. In the past I worked with the UBC AMS Student Society in addressing similar issues. We created gender neutral washrooms and adopted SOGI like policies regarding language in student communication. The challenges I see facing diversity and inclusion is providing better communication to parents that they can understand and can provide input so that a compromise can be reached.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This candidate hasn't added policies to VoteMate.
They may still in the future!
