RESPs

Under the Conservative plan, the government’s contribution to an RESP will rise from 20 percent to 30 percent for every dollar invested up to $2,500 a year. This change will boost the maximum annual grant from $500 to $750.

Under the Conservative plan:

A couple who begins contributing $25 a month to an RESP right after their child’s birth will receive $1,620 by age 18. That’s $540 more than they would receive currently.

Another couple that is able to invest $50 a month will receive $3,240 in government contributions by age 18. That’s $1,080 more than they would receive currently.

Low-income parents will receive 50 percent on the first $500 they invest every year. Today, they only receive 40 percent.

Children's Fitness Tax Credit

With the Children’s Fitness Tax Credit, parents can claim up to $1,000 per child, per year for expenses related to fitness or sports activities.

Parents will receive 15 percent of eligible expenses for children under the age of 16.

 This will be refundable, so lower-income Canadians benefit even more.

 The credit will apply to eligible fitness expenses incurred on behalf of a qualifying child, meaning a child who is, at the beginning of a taxation year, under 16 years of age.

 An eligible fitness expense is defined as a fee paid to a person or partnership that offers one or more prescribed programs of physical activity.

 A prescribed program is defined as a program that is not part of a school’s curriculum, involves a significant amount of physical activity, and is of a duration of at least eight consecutive weeks or five consecutive days. Physical activity is defined as an activity that contributes to cardio-respiratory endurance and to one or more of muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and balance.

 The benefit to a Canadian who claims the full credit of $1000 amounts to $150 of tax savings.

 For parents of children living with a disability, the maximum age of eligibility will rise from 16 to 18, and parents will be able to claim an additional $500 per child. That’s up to $225 of tax savings per child, per year.

Children’s Arts and Learning Tax Credit

The Children’s Arts and Learning Tax Credit will allow parents to claim up to $500 per child for arts-related expenses or other extracurricular educational activities.

● Parents will receive 15 percent of eligible expenses for children under the age of 16.

● This new credit will be refundable, so lower-income Canadians benefit even more.

● Eligible expenses include activities intended to contribute to a child's ability to develop creative skills or expertise, acquire and apply knowledge, or improve dexterity or coordination, in an artistic or cultural discipline including: literary arts; visual arts; performing arts; music; media; languages; customs; and, heritage.

● Not many people know, but this original, Conservative policy covered language courses (which many new Canadian families used to improve their English or French) and extra help for students in subjects like math, science, and coding. That will be the case again; this tax credit is flexible to allow parents to invest in their children’s education.

● The benefit to a Canadian who claims the full credit of $500 amounts to $75 of tax savings.

● For parents of children living with a disability, the maximum age of eligibility will rise from 16 to 18, and parents will be able to claim an additional $500 per child. That’s up to $150 of tax savings per child, per year.

To reduce duplication and ease the application process, we will create a trusted employer system so that companies do not have to constantly re-apply to the program. We will establish clear standards and timelines for Labour Market Impact Assessment processes and revise the zoning regions to make sure rural areas and tourism hotspots are not lumped into large geographic areas with urban hubs.

To ensure that those who enter Canada as low-skilled workers, as justified by concrete labour market data, are treated fairly, we will establish a path to permanence by allowing employers to sponsor applications for permanent residency. Immigration is good for the economy, good for jobs, and good for people who have chosen to come to Canada.

We will continue to monitor the Temporary Foreign Workers Program to ensure that it is achieving its intended results: supporting Canadian businesses with genuine labour needs, while also ensuring that Canadians get the first crack at jobs in our country.

These plans will include strategies for responsibly managing predators and invasive species, like fish harvesters in Newfoundland and Labrador and other regions have been asking for.

To recover our critical stocks and support this important task, a new Conservative government will make critical stock recovery a strategic focus for scientific research conducted by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.

We will increase pathogen testing for open pen aquaculture sites so that we can identify and control risks to wild stocks. At the same time, this will allow the aquaculture industry to build confidence in its practices. We will also encourage the development and adoption of technology that can help to lower the risks associated with contact between wild and farmed salmon.

The Green Public Transit Tax Credit is a 15 percent tax credit for the purchase of public transit passes.

- Eligible expenses will include monthly transit passes, as well as weekly passes and electronic fare cards when used for an extended period.

Seniors

Increase the Age Credit by $1,000; Maintain the Old Age Security at age 65.

Since the Age Credit is income-tested, it will benefit low to middle income seniors. With this measure, an individual aged 65 could receive up to $150 more per year and a couple could receive up to $300 more per year.

Frank Pullia is an MBA, a consulting CMA/CPA with vast experience in business with specialty in Strategic and Community Development Plans.

He has held positions of increasing responsibility in the public (Ontario Hydro), private sector international company (Kimberly Clark of Canada), Canada-USA trade organizations (Northwest-Midwest Alliance) and has been the Principal of Pullia Accounting & Consulting since 1995.

He is very much involved in his community and on May 19, 2011 he received the 10-year Ontario Volunteer Services Award.

Frank’s strong interest in community affairs is coupled with an excellent grasp of the socio economic and political environment, and has served for three terms on Thunder Bay City Council.

He has also represented the city at both the regional (Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association) and federal levels (Federation of Canadian Municipalities) where he served on the Standing Committee on Transportation, International Programs, and Municipal-Aboriginal Relations.
