Biography

submitted by the candidate or their team
Avtar Dhinsa has resided in Burnaby for 50 years and is a lawyer, educator, husband, and father. He is committed to protecting property rights and listening to the concerns of Burnaby residents.

Avtar moved to Burnaby as a child and attended Marlborough Elementary, Nelson Elementary, McPherson Junior High, and Burnaby South Secondary before completing a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and a law degree at UBC.

For nearly three decades, Avtar has practised law exclusively in Burnaby, helping individuals, families, and businesses navigate real-life legal problems. He also teaches business law and real estate law at Acsenda School of Management and lectures for real estate professionals across Canada.

Growing concerns about private property rights helped convince him it was time to enter politics.

Avtar recently joined another lawyer in commencing a proposed class action arising from the 2025 B.C. Supreme Court decision in Cowichan Tribes v. Canada. The decision raised significant questions about the relationship between Aboriginal title and existing property interests in British Columbia.

For most families, their home is their biggest investment. People should be able to trust that when they purchase property in good faith, their ownership is secure.

Avtar's involvement in the property-rights case made him increasingly concerned about the need for elected representatives who understand the legal consequences of government decisions.

Avtar has spent 30 years helping people solve legal problems after they happen. This issue made him realize that sometimes you also have to get involved before decisions are made.

The property rights issue extends beyond homeowners. When uncertainty increases the cost of financing, insurance or development, tenants can be affected too through higher housing costs and reduced investment in rental housing. A stable property system matters to everyone.

Burnaby residents rely upon the same provincial land-title system as property owners elsewhere in British Columbia, and Avtar believes municipal leaders should be prepared to understand and speak out on issues that can affect their residents.

Property rights should not become an issue only after someone discovers that their home, business or investment may be affected. Residents deserve elected representatives who understand these issues, can explain them clearly and are prepared to stand up for them.
