Biography

submitted by the candidate or their team
Hi! I’m Jessica and I am running to serve as trustee for the Cowichan Valley District School Board

I have recently moved to the Cowichan Valley and I want to serve my community in the best way I know how - through our education system & for our future.

I'm so excited to be running for the board of education and below is a little more about me and why I think you should vote for me!

Education:

  1. I have a Masters Degree in Social Justice and Community Engagement from Laurie University (2021). Where we explored the theories, systems and processes at play to better engage communities and support positive changes in justice. During my degree I researched sustainability policies across post-secondary universities. Through this research I reviewed ten sustainability policies and evaluated their value and impact.
  2. I have a Bachelors of Education (2017) - focused on primary and junior education. Through my teaching degree I was required to understand the curriculums and how teaching works on a day to day basis. I learned a great deal about how classrooms work, the importance of school projects and community involvement.
  3. Honours Bachelor of Arts and Science (2018) - specializing in History, Geography & a minor in Political Science. Through this degree I learned how important it is to learn across disciplines. Through the different courses I was able to draw on similarities and differences bringing more understanding to a variety of subjects.

Current Work:

  1. I work at the University of Victoria in climate change research - I have been at UVic for 5 years working with three different teams over this time.
  2. I currently work as an Operations Manager for a Mechanical Engineering team working on Tidal and Wave technology.
  3. Through my role I work with many different partners, I work on contracts and work with many moving parts to ensure our research is done on-time and correctly.

Board Experience

  1. I have sat on student union boards for almost 10 years - serving students locally and nationally
  2. In this time I worked for students and their needs at both the graduate and undergraduate level - supporting students from all different walks of life.
  3. I served students both pre-pandemic and during the pandemic, supporting back to school efforts and more
  4. Within these roles I also was on a hiring committee which hired a new dean at Wilfrid Laurie

Why me - I care about my community and want to serve the best way I know how. With my board experience and my background in education I believe this is the best place for me. I am new to the area and can bring a new fresh perspective while respecting the past.
