Biography
Steve Yamada is serving his third term on Whitby Council and his second term at the Region. He was first elected East Ward Councillor in 2014 and elected Regional Councillor in 2018.
For over 16 years, Steve has been an elementary school teacher with the Toronto District School Board. He lives in Whitby with his wife Jennifer, and their two daughters.
Over the last 10 years, Steve has fought against property tax increases and has pressed hard with staff to find operational savings without harming jobs or service levels. He has supported servicing more industrial lands so that businesses would choose Whitby. This measure has helped to grow the commercial and industrial tax base to relieve the burden on residential taxpayers.
Steve fought tirelessly for the families in Whitby. He advocated and worked with the Government of Ontario to secure the location of the new Whitby Hospital and two new West Whitby schools. Working with families who had lost loved ones at Sunnycrest Nursing Home, local media, and the lawyers for the Ontario Long-Term Care COVID-19 Commission, Steve was able to get the families the opportunity to testify and tell their stories about their family members to bring about meaningful change.
Steve holds a specialized honours degree from York University, a Bachelor of Education from the University of Toronto, and a Master of Public Policy, Administration, and Law from York University.
Steve is running to be part of a new Conservative government led by Pierre Poilivere so families can have powerful paycheques and live in affordable homes in safe neighbourhoods.
