Born and raised in PEI, Aylward has deep roots in the community and a strong commitment to public service. He has an extensive record of volunteering and worked on several Boards, including The Canadian Cancer Society and Tremploy.
He entered the political arena with a background in business and hospitality, bringing a pragmatic and compassionate approach to his work.
Aylward was first elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the district of Stratford-Keppoch in 2011, representing the Progressive Conservative Party. His dedication to his constituents and ability to address local issues earned him widespread respect and support and he was re-elected in 2015 and 2019.
Throughout his political career, Aylward has held several key positions, including Leader of the Official Opposition, Leader of the PC Party of PEI, Minister of Health and Wellness, and Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure.
Aylward’s tenure in provincial politics has been characterized by his advocacy for a strong government that delivers results for Islanders. His approachable demeanour and dedication to good government have made him a trusted decision maker for his riding and his province. James plans to bring that same work ethic and solution-based approach as the next MP for Cardigan.
