Affordability & Housing

Food prices

NDP's promises

Set emergency price caps on basic food items

"We will introduce emergency price caps on basic food items—like pasta, frozen vegetables, and infant formula—to keep costs of food down. These items have seen some of the steepest increases since 2020: cooking oil is up 75 per cent, pasta is up 43 per cent, and infant formula—an essential for so many parents—is up 30 per cent and still climbing.

Price regulations are already in place for a number of sectors of Canada’s economy, like electricity, natural gas and certain medicines. And they have been used in other jurisdictions to tackle food price inflation. We would attempt to negotiate this cap but if big grocery chains refuse, we would act by passing the appropriate legislation.

To enforce this cap, we will put in place a mandatory Grocery Code of Conduct."

"With the cost of living soaring and energy bills eating into household budgets, we will make it more affordable for Canadians to stay warm in the winter and cool in the summer. A major home retrofit program will deliver free energy-saving upgrades to 2.3 million low-income households, and offer grants and low-interest loans to 1 million more. This could include the installation of heat pumps, insulation and other energy efficiency upgrades. It is estimated that in some areas, such upgrades could save a household as much as $4,500 a year." — ndp.ca, retrieved 2025-04-19

NDP's promises

Require strong tenant protection measures from other levels of government as a condition for access to federal housing funding
Require other levels of government to institute rent control, ban renovictions and demovictions

"We will fight soaring rents by requiring strong tenant protection measures from other levels of government as a condition for accessing federal housing funding. These measures include rent control, as well as prohibitions on practices such as renovictions, demovictions and other predatory landlord practices aimed at pushing people out of their homes and driving up rents." — ndp.ca, retrieved 2025-04-19

"We will ban predatory financial landlords from buying any existing purpose-built rental apartments and any of Canada’s existing 650,000 social housing units. Legitimate private landlords and property managers would not be impacted. This measure is aimed at preventing corporate entities like REITs, Hedge Funds, and private equity funds from purchasing affordable housing. These entities do not function like landlords, instead their function is to either liquidate and redevelop the real estate, maximize revenues through poor maintenance leading to renoviction and increasing rents, and generally financialize these properties as assets." — ndp.ca, retrieved 2025-04-19

Tax measures and rebates

NDP's promises

Permanently remove the GST from essentials, like grocery store meals; diapers and strollers; and monthly cell, internet, and home heating bills

"Last fall, the Liberal government put in place a temporary GST holiday on certain goods, in recognition of the cost of living crisis facing families. The Liberals rejected our proposal that the measure be extended, while the Conservatives opposed it altogether.

But families are still facing rising prices – and Donald Trump’s trade war is driving prices even higher. That’s why we would permanently remove the GST from the essentials that every family needs. This includes grocery store meals, diapers and strollers, and monthly cell, internet and home heating bills. We estimate this measure will save a family of four $448 per year." — ndp.ca, retrieved 2025-04-19

Biography

from their website

Born and raised in Corner Brook, Newfoundland and Labrador, Sarah Parson's hardworking family taught her the value of perseverance. Her grandparents earned a living working on the railway, at the paper mill, and in the fish plant so they could provide a better life for their children. In turn, Sarah's parents worked tirelessly to provide a better life for her and her sister. Now, Sarah applies that same determination to give her daughters the future they deserve.

Even as a kid Sarah never shied away from an honest day's work. Early in life she could be seen selling lemonade, delivering the local newspaper, or as she got older, working at the fish plant and local summer camps. This strong work ethic continues to this day, where she works as a youth care worker and student assistant, supporting vulnerable children through therapeutic-informed practices.

Community service has always been a core part of Sarah's life. She began volunteering in grade five and has since contributed to Winter Carnival, St. John Ambulance, triathlons, advocacy walks, and various local organizations. She is an active member on the board of the Corner Brook Status of Women’s Council and on the NL NDP Executive.

As a single mother, Sarah understands the challenges facing working families. Before her two children were accepted into the $10-a-day childcare program, she was paying $400 per week for their care—an unsustainable burden for many parents trying to work full-time and afford the necessities of life. Believing that no one should have to choose between putting food on the table and paying their bills, Sarah is committed to advocating for real solutions that make life more affordable for families.

With Newfoundland’s aging population, Sarah is ready to get to work delivering the proactive policies we need to improve health care, childcare, dental care, and pharmaceutical coverage. While supporting our senior citizens is key, Sarah also recognizes the need to keep young families in the region to ensure a prosperous future for all.

Sarah understands that workers deserve a voice at the table. A proud union member with NAPE, Sarah has stood on the picket line with postal workers and campaigned to defend workers’ rights. She completed the Dale Carnegie Personal Development program and participated in the Equal Voice Campaign College to strengthen her leadership skills. On top of this, Sarah was the interim host on BayFM's The Plain Truth where she engaged in discussions on a range of issues facing the community.

Now, Sarah is running to be the NDP’s Member of Parliament for Long Range Mountains. She wants to show her daughters that hard work and passion can create meaningful change and is committed to being a champion of the people of her community by advocating for better healthcare, fair wages, and opportunities that uplift families across the region.

  • Sarah is a dedicated advocate who works tirelessly to support her community and fight for a better future for working families.

  • She knows firsthand the struggles of everyday people and believes in ensuring that healthcare, education, childcare and fair wages are accessible to all.

  • With deep roots in the Long Range Mountains, Sarah has spent her life volunteering, working, and giving back to her community.

  • As a single mother, union member, and community leader, Sarah is ready to stand up for her neighbours and be a strong voice for change.
