Biography
Nira Dookeran has been a proud resident of Ottawa South since 2007, where she taught civics, history, and English as a Second Language at Ridgemont High School. Her son, Roshan, attended Brookfield High School, and together, they have become deeply connected to their community. Over the past decade, Nira has been a dedicated advocate for sustainability, justice, diversity, and grassroots democracy.
With 10 years of experience at all levels of Green Party activity, Nira has run as a Green candidate three times (twice federally, once provincially) and co-managed one of the largest Green campaigns in Ottawa. She has served on the Ontario Greens’ Provincial Executive, working on policy development, diversity initiatives, and internal governance. Currently, she is the CEO of the Ottawa South Greens federal riding association and Communications Officer for the provincial riding association.
Beyond politics, Nira is a passionate community leader, involved with the Ottawa Renewable Energy Cooperative, the Ontario Health Coalition, and her church’s Environmental Justice Committee. Her expertise spans literacy development for refugees, cultural proficiency training, leadership in diverse organizations, and sustainability initiatives.
