Affordability
Housing is a Human Right. We need real affordability when it comes to housing and fair distribution of wealth when it comes to taxes. Let’s focus on jobs that will drive the Canadian economy to a healthy future. I’m committed to putting people and the planet before profit.
Respect
Every voice across our country matters. That’s why we need proportional representation and methods of equitably distributing wealth and power; To offer every person in Canada a life with dignity through mechanisms like Universal Basic Income. This starts with reconciliation with Indigenous peoples and continues with electoral reform.
Climate
Climate Change is the biggest issue facing the world today, and will be a challenge for my child's generation and many generations to come. As a scientist, I know we need bold action immediately. As a community organizer, I know we need everyone at the table to make the needed sustainable and just transition away from fossil fuels.
Biography
As a scientist, Leigh understands that we only have a few years to drastically change the trajectory of our warming climate. As an environmental activist, she also knows the power of community activism in creating change. The Green Party is leading this change with sound science, economic and social policies that can create a just transition to a sustainable future for everyone.
With an educational background in science, Leigh completed graduate work in environmental management in Nova Scotia. Having grown up in Scarborough, she returned to Ontario in 2012 to work in the environmental non-profit sphere, including Rouge Park. In 2016 her career shifted towards science communication and coordinating programs to support underrepresented voices in the sciences. This has included managing Soapbox Science Toronto for the past 8 years, which supports women and non-binary people in the sciences.
Leigh is a strong environmental advocate. She has been involved in campaigns to stop the development of pipelines in Southern Ontario and protect natural areas like the Rouge Park for future generations. Since moving to Ajax, she has joined the Board of Thickson’s Woods Land Trust, and successfully supported efforts to resist provincial Ministerial Zoning Orders (MZO) and protect the Greenbelt.
Leigh is married to a wonderful partner and is the proud mom to a lively 2-year-old. The family enjoys exploring the beautiful neighbourhoods and natural areas of Ajax with their dog.
Reason for running
It is a privilege to run for office. I say that because with privilege, comes responsibility; responsibility to my child's future, to our neighbour's livelihood and to the life that we share this beautiful earth with.
I chose to run with the Green Party because Green members represent their constituents first, and the party second. I will never be asked to vote against the interests of Ajacians for the betterment of my party.
I also chose the Green Party because while I share their ambitious goals of climate preparedness, social support, fair taxation, and peaceful conduct, I respect their dedication to balancing the budget. We are the only party to consistently produce a fully costed party platform.
In my professional and volunteer roles, I have not been afraid to do things differently and find novel solutions to our most pressing problems; all grounded in science and common sense.
