Version 1
A note on these terms: We are not lawyers. If we ever get some amount of money together, we may hire a lawyer to write some proper terms for us, but in the meantime, this is what we have. If you see any problems, please do let us know. We want everyone to be as happy as possible, and we don't want anyone to get hurt, so knowing what's up and having a chance to fix it would be awesome.
Overall, following the intent of these terms will work out well, while trying to find loopholes and being "clever" won't. Please, be kind to us, to everyone on VoteMate, and just to people in general. We'll try our best to treat you with kindness as well.
When will these terms effect you?
These terms of use effect you if you either:
- Use VoteMate on or after 13 September, 2019;
- Sign up or confirm yourself as a candidate, representative for a candidate, or party representative, on or after 6 September, 2019.
These terms of use generally apply to you if you access the VoteMate.org website or use the VoteMate app. Different parts of it will of course apply differently, depending on if you sign up and whether or not you sign up as a candidate or the representative for a party, for example.
What happens if these terms change?
When any component of these terms change, we will email any users who are effected by the changed portion, as well as tweet about the changes at @VoteMateOrg.
Depending on the nature of the changes, we'll try to create a grace period before which changes take effect. That grace period will be included in the email and will be posted on this page. Previous versions of the Terms will also be included on this page. Continued use of VoteMate after the date the changes take effect, except attempts to read these terms or the privacy policy, to delete or log out from your account, or to disable email alerts, will be considered agreement to the terms.
Content posted by private users
All content posted by private users remains the property of the user who posted it. By posting content, you grant VoteMate permission to distribute the content worldwide until such a time as you ask us to no longer do so. By posting any content, you assert that you have the right to grant us such permission.
All content posted by users must not, in our opinion:
- Constitute hate speech
- Be intended to cause discomfort or harm to any individual
- Violate any applicable law, either in the country it was posted, or in Canada
- Be, to the best of your knowledge, factually inaccurate
- Be indecent
- Reasonably result in our violating any applicable law
We may decide to remove or hide content posted by users. Usually, we will do so if we in our sole discretion find the content to not contribute positively to the discussion. We will take special care when doing so and apply journalistic standards to such a decision, while keeping in mind our obligations under the law and our agreement with our hosting providers.
Content posted by candidates, representatives of candidates, or party representatives
All content posted by candidates, representatives of candidates, or party representatives, can be considered on the public record. By posting such content, you as a candidate, representative for a candidate, or representative for a party, grant VoteMate permission to distribute the content worldwide forever, and to allow others to do the same. By posting any content, you assert that you have the right to grant us such permission.
All content posted by candidates, representatives of candidates, or party representatives, must not, in our opinion:

We may decide to remove or hide content posted by candidates, representatives of candidates, or party representatives. We will usually do so in our sole discretion if we feel the content violates these terms or the terms of our hosting providers. We will take special care when doing so and apply journalistic standards to such a decision, while keeping in mind our obligations under the law and our agreement with our hosting providers.
Signing up as a candidate, representative for a candidate, or party representative
You must be truthful when stating to us that you are a candidate, represent a candidate, or represent a party. We take violations of this pretty seriously.
Factual accuracy
While we do our best to maintain factual accuracy on VoteMate, content posted on behalf of candidates or parties, or by users, should be considered the opinion and responsibility of that individual. We will of course endeavour to remove hate speech, blatant factual inaccuracies, pornography, or other questionable content, but we cannot guarantee that everything will always be removed.
Generally, if we have a piece of content posted by a candidate, party, or user, the factual statement we're making is "this person says this".
