Surj Uppal believes strong governance, responsible financial leadership and long-term planning are essential to building a school system where students can thrive.

A long-time Delta resident, business executive and youth soccer coach, Surj brings more than 25 years of senior leadership experience with major Canadian companies including McDonald’s Canada, Save-On-Foods, BCLC and Dilawri Auto Group. Throughout his career, he has managed large-scale operations, led organizational growth and helped businesses adapt in rapidly changing industries. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for New Destiny Mining and hosts the AI Surge podcast focused on innovation and emerging technologies.

Surj has coached with South Delta United Soccer Club for nearly 20 seasons and strongly believes in helping young people build confidence, resilience and leadership skills both inside and outside the classroom. His experience working closely with students, families and educators, including through his family’s connection to the teaching profession, has reinforced the importance of supporting teachers and ensuring schools have the resources students need to succeed.

Surj recognizes the Delta School District as one of the community’s largest and most important organizations, with a responsibility to manage public resources carefully and transparently. His priorities include strong literacy and numeracy foundations, student wellbeing, safe and inclusive schools and preparing students for success in a rapidly evolving world.

Born and raised in Delta, Surj started out working on the farms and construction sites of Delta, before moving to the business world. He and his wife have raised their two sons in the community they proudly call home. He remains actively involved through representing South Delta Soccer on his men’s team, mentoring and community leadership.
