from their website
Monika is a passionate community and labour activist. She believes we can create a more just economy that supports working families and our planet – not just the ultra-rich. Holding a bachelor’s degree in environmental science, Monika is an arborist by profession and deeply passionate about climate action. She’s standing up for investments in green jobs, renewable energy projects, and public transit.

Monika has always looked for ways to help fellow working people. Alongside her work in the City of Surrey’s Parks Department, she is an active member of the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 402, standing up for good jobs and livable wages. Monika also serves as both executive at large for her local union, as well as CUPE’s Metro Vancouver District Council. She is also a former regional alternate vice-president for CUPE BC.

In 2014, Monika – originally from Aldergrove – moved to North Delta from Vancouver, attracted by its strong sense of community, and to be closer to her aging parents. Always taking the lead on social justice issues, she was inspired by Jagmeet Singh, and New Democrats, commitment to helping everyday people during the pandemic. She knows that Justin Trudeau said some pretty words, but local businesses and workers fell behind during the pandemic. While everyday people struggled, Canada's ultra-rich made record profits. Monika knows that Canada’s pandemic recovery needs to work for you. Everyone should be able to afford their prescription medication, support their families with accessible child care, and have a safe place to call home with investments in affordable housing.

Monika’s greatest inspiration has always been her father. A retired United Church minister, he taught her from a young age the importance of communities taking care of each other. Proud of her Filipina heritage, Monika is passionate about supporting equity-seeking groups, including people of colour, people who are LGBTQ2S+, and people with disabilities. She knows we can create a future where racism, discrimination, homophobia, and transphobia have no place in Canada.

Outside of her work and activism, Monika can be found riding the waves with her Dragonboat team and exploring our incredible green spaces with her Labrador, Laika.
