A long-time community organizer and equality advocate, Alison Bennie is thrilled to be your Liberal candidate for the Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock region.

Growing up overseas with her siblings and Scottish/Burmese father and Chinese mother, Alison travelled extensively before completing a Bachelor of Arts at Guelph University. In 2004, she relocated from Toronto to Cannington, Ontario with her family. There she discovered a vibrant, passionate, and accepting township. She immediately threw herself into community organizing, joining multiple committees and was the event coordinator for 10 years for the Cannington Dog Sled Races and Winter Festival which saw massive success, drawing in thousands of attendees. The Cannington Haunted Trail idea was hatched in her house with two other residents. Although Alison could only volunteer for 3 years on that, it has grown under expert guidance and is a well known event in the area. She spent two years on the Board of Management of Cannington Town Hall, an initiative which saved the local town hall from being demolished and transformed it into the current-day public library. She currently serves on the board of the Brock Tourism Advisory Committee, North Durham Pride and Pflag (Parents and Friends of Lesbian and Gays) Durham Region. She also operates her own local design and printing business, serving nonprofits, arts organizations, events, and companies of all sizes for over 30 years. 

As a queer woman of colour, equity, justice and inclusion have always been paramount for Alison. She has seen and experienced firsthand the issues that affect rural communities: lack of proper medical care and mental health services, cuts to public transit, and lack of affordable housing. She understands that for people to thrive in this beautiful region, we need solutions. We can come together to talk, open our minds and hearts, and find solutions. As your Liberal candidate, Alison is eager to meet you, and hopes you’ll consider voting for her to represent you and your home at Queen’s Park.
