Stratford-Mermaid MLA Michele Beaton is the Green Party of PEI candidate for District 5, Mermaid-Stratford, in the 2023 provincial election.
Beaton was elected to represent District 5, Mermaid-Stratford, in 2019. She served as the Opposition Critic for Finance, and Agriculture and Land. She currently serves as Opposition Critic for Health and Wellness, and as the Opposition House Leader. Beaton is a member of the Standing Committee on Health and Social Development and was the previous chair of the Public Accounts Committee.
Beaton believes good government for Islanders must be built on transparency, accountability and long-term planning. As critic for Health and Wellness, Beaton is focused on patient care, primary access to healthcare, and support for conditions impacting Islanders such as endometriosis and ovarian cancer.
In the legislature, Beaton successfully sponsored “Follow the Dollar” legislation that allows the Auditor General to audit third parties who receive public funds, like the Red Cross and the Salvation Army, to ensure public funds are spent as intended.
“As a critic for Finance and Agriculture, I became very aware of how lack of oversight has allowed the laws of Prince Edward Island to be circumvented. The 2,200 acre land sale of Brendel Farms to a large industrial farming corporation highlighted glaring gaps in both the Lands Protection Act and the Business Corporation Act,” says Beaton.
Beaton currently resides in Alexandra with her daughter Ava. She is an active member with Girl Guides of Canada and the Stratford and Area Lions Club and regularly serves up breakfast at the Birchwood Intermediate breakfast program.
