Biography

submitted by the candidate or their team
I was first elected to city council in 2018, I believe that I am a fundamental part of the governance team on city council because of my ability to see multiple perspectives and outcomes of policies.

I focus is solving the concerns of the people I speak with every day – in person, over the phone, or through email conversations.

My concerns are the concerns that the public have about public safety, affordable housing, homelessness, and climate change.

I am a strong and experienced leader, accustomed to balancing multiple, and often, opposing desires from citizens. When asked what it takes to make a balance, I replied, “it’s not easy, but it’s important work, and everyone’s concerns are valid. It requires an experienced team of leaders to make the decisions which form policies that best benefit the people of Nanaimo.”

I have lived in Nanaimo for the last thirty years. I returned to Nanaimo where I graduated from to finish raising my children, grow a business, and serve his community in the arts, Rotary, and on the boards of the Chamber of Commerce, United Way, Nanaimo Executive Association and recently on the Regional District of Nanaimo. I can be found at most community events, on my bike, or taking transit. You can reach me at don@bonner.ca.

Reason for running

Nanaimo City Council has accomplished a lot in the last four years. Many of the institutions abandoned by the last council have been reformed and are working.

However we have a lot still to do and I have the experience to help do that much needed work.

I'm looking for another 4 year term to nurture the institutions that we have setup in the last four years, to continue to grow our new found relationships with the business community, Snuneymuxw, Nanaimo Port, VIU and the non-profits in our town and the public.

Our new city plan, I believe will be the next councils mandate to create an Action Plan to implement the 5 goals of the City Plan.

  • A GREEN NANAIMO: RESILIENT& REGENERATIVE ECOSYSTEMS
  • A CONNECTED NANAIMO: EQUITABLE ACCESS & MOBILITY
  • A HEALTHY NANAIMO: COMMUNITY WELLBEING & LIVABILITY
  • AN EMPOWERED NANAIMO: RECONCILIATION, REPRESENTATION & INCLUSION
  • A PROSPEROUS NANAIMO: THRIVING & RESILIENT ECONOMY

Our newly development plan for the downtown needs to be moved forward so that we can start on that work next year. The work on the Jean's Burn area also needs to be done at the same time.
