Biography

from their website

Since being first-elected in 2008, Spencer Chandra Herbert has been proud to stand up for the people of Vancouver West End and the issues that matter to them.

A well-known community and human rights activist, Spencer has been voted Vancouver’s Unsung Hero by readers of the Westender and voted Best MLA by readers of the Georgia Straight twice.

During his time in the BC Legislature, Spencer has stood up for renters facing illegal evictions, worked to reduce homelessness by founding Vancouver’s Rent Bank, led the successful fight to explicitly protect transgender people in BC’s Human Rights Code, had the government name the Pacific Salmon British Columbia’s Official Fish, supported the BC Arts Council and restored an industry-led tourism marketer.

Before becoming an MLA, Spencer was an award-winning artist and arts producer working primarily in theatre and dance, he was the associate producer of the United Nations World Urban Festival and served as an elected Vancouver Park Board commissioner from 2005 to 2008.

Since helping the BC NDP form government in 2017, Spencer has championed increased protections for renters, pushed for further action on the overdose crisis. He works hard every day to make your life more affordable, protect the services you count on and build a sustainable economy that works for everyone.

Spencer and his BC NDP colleagues are making BC better for people, and helping families get ahead. You can trust that he’s on your side.
