Biography

submitted to Victoria's elections office by the candidate
Former lawyer, charity leader, founder of a workers' cooperative and CFO - now a governance consultant and public policy researcher. Volunteer, coach, parent, and resident of Victoria.

I practiced law in Ontario and BC as an environmental offences prosecutor, and as counsel advising on law reform. I have Masters degrees in law and in economics. I’ve worked for governments, non-profits, and the private sector. I’m currently a small business owner and a community volunteer.

I’ve served on the Boards of Directors of several charities and non-profits, and a couple of businesses. I’ve been a Director, Treasurer and Vice President of the Fairfield Gonzales Community Association, and currently sit on our Community Association Land Use Committee (CALUC) and serve as Chair of our Neighbourhood Improvement Committee.

I’m fortunate to work with good people on improving governance systems, analyzing government budgets, improving climate action, serving Indigenous communities, creating good green jobs, promoting fair wages and just transitions, and building safer, healthier and more liveable communities. Some examples:

  • Strategic planning, policy and governance advice for charity clients in BC and Alberta.
  • Co-founder of a firm that supports Indigenous communities in addressing industrial development in their Territories (land use, business planning, Traditional Knowledge studies, impact and benefit agreements, etc).
  • Author and co-author of a number of publications, e.g. on energy efficiency building retrofits, achieving climate goals while creating green jobs, and adjusting municipal budgets to improve sustainability.
  • Prepare the calculations, and write the reports, for the Greater Victoria Living Wage campaign (the hourly wage required for two adults to support a family of four).

I have lived in four neighbourhoods in the City of Victoria – as a renter and as an an owner – and my partner and I are raising our kids here. Victoria is changing and growing, and we need to make sure it remains a great place to live, work and raise a family.

I’m continuing to listen, and I’d love to hear what you want to see in our future. Please email me at dave@davethompsonvictoria.ca.

Reason for running

submitted by the candidate or their team
I love Victoria, and its people. I want us to move forward on climate action and housing attainability and affordability. I want Council to be well-functioning, and focussed on policy rather than personalities, and civility rather than division.
